Proposed cellular model of electrogenic Na+ absorption in human colon. This process is located predominantly in surface colonocytes.616 Apical Na+ entry is passive, channel mediated, and inhibited by amiloride. Basolateral Na+ extrusion is mediated by Na+,K+-ATPase (the electrogenic "Na+ pump").
