Abstract

In this article, the author discusses his experience as Vice President for Design and Construction for the Hospital Corporation of America (HCA), the largest private sector hospital construction sponsor in the United States. HCA's experience, as well as the facility-related research it has supported, offer valuable lessons to single project and smaller multi-project sponsors. Health care administrators and students will also find that the author's description of the advantages and disadvantages of various contracting methods provides a helpful guide.
