Abstract

This chapter describes the incidence, diagnosis, and management of cerebral concussions. A scheme for grading the severity of a concussion is presented and guidelines are given for when to allow the athlete to return to competition. Other types of head injuries described include epidural and subdural hematoma, subarachnoid hemorrhage, and malignant brain edema syndrome.
