Neonatal jaundice. An update for family physicians
Abstract
Background: Neonatal jaundice is the most common problem encountered in newborns. Fifty per cent of term and 80% of preterm babies are jaundiced within the first week.
Objective: This paper examines the causes of jaundice and describes the effective management of this common condition.
Discussion: Neonatal jaundice could well be an emergency and could lead to disasters, if not identified in time. It is the most common cause for admission in the first week of life, especially since the development of the early discharge program.
