Issues in cytologic screening and evaluation
Abstract
A variety of cytologic specimens may be useful in the screening and evaluation of patients for neoplastic processes. Fine needle aspiration cytology is an example of a cost-effective procedure for mass lesions and may provide a definitive diagnosis for treatment purposes. The sensitivity of a single cytologic procedure varies from 70% to more than 90% depending on specimen type and procurement methods. Communication with the laboratory, including provision of clinical information, is important to ensure proper specimen submission and handling and will also clarify cytologic terminology and appropriate follow-up measures.
