Clinical course of a fatal ingestion of diquat
Abstract
A 28-year-old male ingested the herbicide diquat. The patient rapidly developed severe gastrointestinal and metabolic disturbances, airway compromise, respiratory failure, renal failure, hemodynamic collapse, and seizures. We describe multiple metabolic abnormalities, an apparent artifact introduced by diquat in the laboratory assay for serum creatinine, serum diquat levels, and the need for emergency airway management.
