1995 outlook: research strategy
Abstract
AIDS: There are more opportunities for progress toward improvement in AIDS/HIV treatment. The tools for research are better; there are safe, rapid, low-cost, high-quality treatment trials; and there are more cases of improvement in people with HIV or AIDS. However, no one knows how long the improvements will last. Success stories should be seen as treatment leads for further research. The author proposes research strategies: such as using small, rapid screening trials as a way to prove clinical benefit, and using new, unknown mechanisms of action. Treatments which seem to be helping in some way, but which have no known mechanism of action, should be researched to discover how they work. National commitment to AIDS also affects research. A social movement needs to be established so that people can support AIDS funding and create progress in treating AIDS.
