ICAAC 1995: new perspectives on treatment
Abstract
AIDS: The 35th annual Inter-Science Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy (ICAAC), held in September 1995, included about twenty percent of its presentations on topics relevant to AIDS. As a result of ICAAC, protease inhibitors used to treat HIV infection were brought to the forefront, and designs of simple clinical trials to quickly test new drugs in this class were outlined. The most important immediate result from ICAAC presentations is that the current standard of care, i.e., monotherapy with AZT, will cease to exist. Treatments are now being based on drug combinations, and individual care is based on viral load, CD4 count, and other tests.
