First-ever AIDS incidence decline marks start of a new era in epidemic
Abstract
AIDS: The first-time drop in the number of reported AIDS cases in the United States last year points to the increasing effectiveness of new treatments and the decreasing reliability of national surveillance techniques. Helene Gayle, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) National Center for HIV, STD, and TB Prevention, states that as HIV treatments have advanced, reports of AIDS cases have become less indicative of recent trends in the epidemic.
