Treatment in developing countries: new UNAIDS pilot program
Abstract
AIDS: The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) announced a program designed to make AIDS treatment readily available to HIV/AIDS patients in developing countries. In each country two entities will be created: a national HIV/AIDS advisory board under the Ministry of Health, and a nonprofit company that will be a clearinghouse for placing orders and receiving drugs on behalf of the government. The initiative includes HIV drugs, antimicrobials, and antibiotics. The information obtained through these efforts will be used to aid countries in mobilizing the necessary resources to treat HIV-infected people and help control the epidemic.
