An tale of two epidemics: HIV and stimulant use

M Gorman. Focus. 1998 Mar.

Abstract

AIDS: Injection drug use is frequently associated with HIV infection; however, other drugs that can be injected or inhaled are equally risky. Stimulants include amphetamines, methamphetamines, and cocaine and are the chief category of risky drugs that impair judgement and increase sexual risk-taking. The relationship between stimulant use and the HIV epidemic of the 1990s is examined. Usage profiles and descriptions of the effect of the stimulants on the body are detailed. Two case studies of former stimulant users describe their experiences with addiction to the drugs.
