Return to work for persons with HIV/AIDS: back to the future?
Abstract
AIDS: The approval of protease inhibitors in 1996 led to significant improvements in the health of many people living with HIV/AIDS (PHAs). In 1997, Canadian AIDS Service Organizations (ASOs) responded by developing programs and services designed to assist those who want to return to the workplace. The AIDS Committee of Toronto (ACT) commissioned a feasibility study on return-to-work programming designed to address the issues and experiences of PHAs, determine the suitability of existing assistance programs, and recommend a range of strategies. The study identified numerous barriers to effective reintegration of PHAs into the workforce and recommended a pilot study of vocational rehabilitation for PHAs, expansion of current ASOs benefits advice services, and education programs for vocational rehabilitation agencies and the insurance industry. MIELS-Quebec's Study/Action Project holds bi-weekly meetings for PHAs who want to return to work; contact information is included. A research study being coordinated by the Canadian AIDS Society (CAS) is soliciting input on the labor force needs of PSAs from people in each CAS region. Contact information is provided.
