Unequal care sustains vertical transmission rate

T Kasper. GMHC Treat Issues. 1999 Feb.

Abstract

AIDS: The 6th Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections reported significant progress in reducing the rates of mother-to-child HIV transmission in the U.S., but there is considerably less progress in the developing world. The PETRA study is a multinational effort to assess the potency of shorter regimens, compared to what is used in the U.S., in preventing vertical transmission. Results from the PETRA study show that short course therapy can provide substantial benefits. Other studies are reviewing whether Cesarean delivery is effective in reducing transmission rates. Information is still needed on how mother-to-child transmission occurs and how HIV drugs actually interfere with vertical transmission.
