Adherence: working with homeless populations
Abstract
AIDS: Before establishing medical care for homeless people with HIV, fundamental needs must be met, along with stabilizing other needs such as mental health or substance abuse treatment. Case managers can help provide the foundation for basic needs such as housing and food, then assist the homeless in obtaining regular medical care. Case managers must monitor and encourage clients' routine participation in health care visits and provide the client with information about HIV on an understandable level. Counselors should be prepared to answer questions and be supportive of clients' emotions. Familiarity with a client's routine is essential for promoting proper storage of medications and for adherence in drug administration. Counselors can facilitate adherence by helping clients practice taking medications and by advising them of how to manage potential side effects.
