Abstract
AIDS: The first national medical conference dedicated to AIDS and its effects on African-Americans was held in Washington in February 1999. More than 600 people attended and many others had to be turned away. The conference web site, which is getting 15,000 visitors a day, includes complete audio and slides of nearly all presentations, which covered topics such as antiretroviral therapy, HIV practices in a Harlem hospital, and new treatment approaches. Other issues discussed at the conference include epidemiology of HIV, the politics related to recognition of high infection rates among African-Americans, HIV in women, and treatment and care in prison.
