HIV-1 immunogen (remune)
Abstract
AIDS: The intended action of the HIV-1 Immunogen is to stimulate the immune systems of those already infected with HIV. The vaccine is made from an inactivated form of HIV that cannot replicate, but is believed to assist the immune system in building defenses against the virus. Skeptics are unsure of the effectiveness of the infertile vaccine. They wonder if an inactive form of the virus can stimulate an immune response when contact with the live virus does not elicit an adequate response. Complete results of the blinded study are still unknown; however, one group of participants is exhibiting improved HIV-specific CD4+ responses. If the vaccine, which has few side effects, proves effective, it would help to decrease dependence on antiviral treatments.
