Investigation of the role of venous pressure in bone changes during prolonged weightlessness
Abstract
NASA: Several recent studies have suggested roles for venous pressure, intraosseous pressure, and mechanical load in the regulation of bone mass. This paper describes a study conducted during the EuroMIR 95 space mission in which a venous tourniquet system was used to apply intermittent compression to the right ankle of crewmembers. Bone mineral density was then measured using the ultrasonic Bone Densitometer. Hardware development is discussed in detail. Data are in the process of being analyzed and are not presented.
