Doe v. Mathews

U.S. District Court, District of Columbia. Fed Suppl. .

Abstract

KIE: The U.S. District Court, District of Columbia, dismissed a suit brought by residents of Virginia and the District of Columbia to prevent the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare from complying with the Hyde Amendment, a federal statute prohibiting the expenditure of government funds for abortion except where the mother's life would be endangered by carrying the fetus to term. The suit was dismissed because it could not be shown that injury to the women seeking abortions was imminent, or that states would refuse to pay for those abortions for which the federal government would not reimburse them.
