Retained lens fragments after cataract surgery

I U Scott et al. Ophthalmol Clin North Am. 2001 Dec.

Abstract

In conclusion, the incidence of retained lens fragments appears to have increased in recent years. The timing of vitrectomy can be delayed to permit improvement of corneal edema, ocular congestion, and acute postoperative inflammation. Placement of a posterior chamber intraocular lens at the time of the initial cataract surgery does not adversely affect final visual results. Retinal detachment is a frequent adverse event in these eyes. Vitrectomy and removal of retained lens fragments restores good visual acuity and reduces secondary glaucoma in the majority of patients.
