Uterine leiomyoma: a treatable condition

M E Moorehead et al. Ann N Y Acad Sci. 2001 Dec.

Abstract

Many risk factors have been identified as having either a protective or a negative effect on the development of fibroids, but due to methodological issues and a lack of long-term studies, the exact effect of these factors is ambiguous. In similar dispute is the proper treatment of fibroids. Recent technological advances have introduced newer, less invasive techniques that can remove part or most of the fibroids, but do not eliminate fibroid redevelopment or adhesion formation. In addition, the long-term effects of these procedures have not been studied fully. More prospective research is required to better understand the epidemiology and treatment of this highly morbid condition.
