Bangladesh: "success story" in health and family welfare
Abstract
PIP: Since the 1994 International Conference of Population and Development (ICPD), Bangladesh has achieved a substantial success in lowering fertility and improving the lives of its people. Such achievements are attributed to a variety of factors, including 1) sustained political commitment of the government, 2) maternal and child health-based strategies, 3) extensive networking of field workers and clinics, 4) a committed field force with women-to-women services, 5) a well-knit community-based distribution approach, 6) active collaboration between government and nongovernmental organizations, 7) support of civil society, 8) advocacy with religious and community leaders, 9) the proactive role of mass media, 10) intersectoral cooperation, 11) wide use of research in policy-making, 12) empowerment of women, and 13) modernization effects of education. In accordance with its commitment to ICPD, Bangladesh's National Plan of Action focuses on poverty eradication, women's equality and empowerment, and reproductive health.
