Abstract

PIP: This report of marriages, births, and deaths in Germany summarizes changes and trends in 1996. As in previous years, there were fewer marriages, and the trend toward higher age at marriage continued. There was a significant increase in the number of births and in the total fertility rate, and the number of births to women over 30 continued to increase. There were fewer deaths, and life expectancy continued to rise. The report draws some comparisons between the former East and West Germany, and also looks at past trends.
