Laparoscopic tubal sterilization
Abstract
PIP: In Hong Kong, 120 women between 26 and 45 with 2-4+ children underwent laparoscopic sterilization. The procedure is performed with a Wolf laparoscope and Palmer forceps under general anesthesia. A sub-umbilical incision accommodates the laparoscope. The forceps are inserted in an incision below and lateral to the laparoscope. The cornual end of the fallopian tube is coagulated and cut, wounds are closed with a clip, and the patient is discharged 24 hours later. Complications, which occurred in 6.7% of cases, included bleeding (4 cases, 2 requiring laparotomy), emphysema, bowel perforation, subsequent pregnancy due to coagulation of the round ligament instead of the tube, and one pre-sterilization pregnancy.
