Barrier methods
Abstract
PIP: Male and female contraceptive methods are discussed with special emphasis on the diaphragm. The diaphragm is usually selected as an initial choice of barriers because it is easiest to insert. Also available are a cervical variety, the Vault or Dumas cap (fits across the cervix and part of the vault), and a cross between these 2 types. High motivation is required for the use of a barrier. Motivation is influenced by: 1) a proper diaphragm fit which is examined at least every 6 months; 2) proper teaching of diaphragm placement and why and how it works; 3) the essential addition of a chemical barrier or spermicide; 4) proper timing of diaphragm insertion; and 5) the proper care of the device. The use of the spermicide alone is inadequate as a contraceptive. 1 of the commonest barriers is the male condom which can be highly efficient when used correctly and on every occasion.
