[The golden year of the silver ring: Ernst Grafenberg and his ring (author's transl)]

[Article in French]
R J Thomsen. Contracept Fertil Sex (Paris). 1980 Apr.

Abstract

PIP: The article briefly recounts the life of Dr. Ernst Grafenberg, and the invention of the first IUD, the Grafenberg ring. Dr. Grafenberg, a German Jew, studied in Gottingen and Munich, and was an ophtalmologist before turning to gynecology. His IUD was presented in London in 1929, at the International Congress of Sexual Reform. Before coming to the U.S., Dr. Grafenberg survived 3 years of imprisonment by the Nazis, from which he was freed thanks to a huge ransom paid by Margaret Sanger. Dr. Grafenberg is rightly considered the "father" of the IUD not because he was the first to utilize such a method, but for the scientific precision in which he conducted the investigation and reported the results.
