[The population of West Sumatra: a profile, trends, and projections]
Abstract
PIP: A review of population trends in West Sumatra, Indonesia, is presented, together with projections up to 1990. The author notes that the population increased at a rate of about 2.21 percent per year between 1971 and 1980 and will continue to increase at about 2.12 percent per year up to 1990. The age composition of the population is expected to remain largely unchanged, with a high proportion of young adults and children. Urbanization levels are expected to remain relatively low and variations in spatial distribution to persist. The implications of these trends for development policy are considered.
