FIGO/WHO Workshop on Innovative Approaches to Maternal and Neonatal Care As Part of Primary Health Care, Tokyo, 22-24 October, 1979
Abstract
PIP: This report is a summary of the objectives of the FIGO/WHO Workshop (Tokyo, October 1979) and its recommendations for the further improvement of maternal and perinatal health care in developing countries. Major factors affecting maternal and child health (nutrition, infection, unregulated fertility) were seen as products of poor socioeocnomic conditions. Contributing factors include accessability to and quality of family health services and family planning programs. 2/3rds of the world's population still remain without ready access to benefits of modern health care. In many countries high priority is given to hospital-based medicine as opposed to, and at the expense of, primary health care, utilizing family and community involvement. For example, use of trained birth attendants would serve as a valuable link between professional services and the community once they receive appropriate training. Development of maternal and child health clinics is important as part of primary health care, but also requires a larger share of the country's resources to be made available. It is recognized that each country should identify appropriate channels of communication with elected leaders, mass media, and voluntary organizations in an effort to implement the recommendations of the workshop.
