I have an IUD--what should I do?

No authors listed. Contracept Technol Update. 1986 Jul.

Abstract

PIP: This article, based on interviews with family planning clinicians and IUD manufacturers, discusses options available to current IUD users. At this point, only 1 IUD (Progestasert) remains on the US market. It is stressed that the decision by other companies to stop marketing the IUD was based on financial considerations rather than the discovery of new safety problems. Users of the inert lippes Loop or the Saf-T-Coil have the option of leaving their IUD in place as long as no problems develop. Women using the Copper-7 or Copper-T devices may continue IUD use until its expiration date. At this point, women can seek a replacement (available in other countries), switch to the Progestasert, or find a new method of contraception. The Progestasert device must be replaced every year. Contraceptive methods that are particularly suited to former IUD users include sterilization and low-dose oral contraceptives. In determining which of these options is best, current IUD users should consider factors such as physical health, economic resources, sexual lifestyle, and future childbearing plans.
