[Former Soviet Central Asia: a cultural and demographic entity]
Abstract
PIP: The author examines the common social and cultural features of the five independent states that were formerly part of the Soviet Central Asian region, that is Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. He notes that these countries have common demographic features in that they share many of the characteristics of developing countries together with a significant Russian ethnic demographic presence. The impact of the region's colonial history on current political, socioeconomic and demographic trends is considered.
