Shared rights, shared responsibilities
Abstract
PIP: HIV/AIDS directly threatens the health and life of millions of people worldwide, and indirectly potentially the entire global population. HIV/AIDS also threatens individual dignity, autonomy, and human rights. The ability of individuals and groups to avoid infection or cope with HIV depends upon the extent to which they are able to exercise rights and bear responsibilities. While it is true that these latter abilities vary according to individual and group status and social power, that these are rights which must be protected and responsibilities which must be borne if humankind is to confront HIV/AIDS successfully is based upon fundamental principles. This paper lists some of the rights and responsibilities which should be protected, encouraged, and shared as we address HIV/AIDS. The lists are presented to describe some of the elements critical to an effective response to HIV/AIDS; stimulate individuals, groups, communities, and nations to consider which rights and responsibilities they share in the pandemic; and further the ongoing dialogue as the HIV/AIDS pandemic moves through our lives and societies.
