New services for women in Nicaragua
Abstract
PIP: Marie Stopes International's partner in Nicaragua, IXCHEN, operates an obstetric unit in Managua called Casa de Partos. This unit opened in August 1995. It complements the existing prenatal and postnatal services provided through IXCHEN Women's Centres. It provides comprehensive obstetric care to low-income women who are not covered by the social security system. The public health system provides poor quality prenatal care, often limited to weighing the pregnant woman and measuring the fetus. IXCHEN health workers provide regular check-ups and education on nutrition and exercise, the birth process, breast feeding, and child immunization. They refer high-risk pregnancies and women in need of major surgical interventions to specialists in larger hospitals. The obstetric unit has separate sections for labor, delivery, and care of the newborns. IXCHEN Women's Centres provide follow-up care for mother and baby (postnatal check-ups and family planning information). All women pay a modest flat fee for IXCHEN obstetric services, regardless of type of obstetric care received.
