Abstract

PIP: Despite urging by the U.S. government since 1972, states assumed only minimal responsibility for funding family planning services. Funding increased by $8.9 million in 1974, but the increase was accounted for mainly by 4 states: California, South Carolina, Texas, and Massachusetts. Funding in 6 states was reduced in 1974 and 19 states had no state-sponsored family planning program. More than 4/5 of all funding in 1974 was concentrated in 7 states. State aid is more often given to health agencies than to welfare agencies. Much of the state appropriations is used to match federal grants. These figures are the result of the annual survey of state health and welfare programs performed by the Alan Guttmacher Institute.
