Population education: the role of the Federal Health Education Branch
Abstract
PIP: The Nigerian Federal Health Education Branch (FHEB), of the Federal Ministry of Health and Human Services, aims to implement strategies for public education about family planning and to conduct baseline surveys, KAP surveys, and mass media campaigns to disseminate information; FHEB also conducts research and evaluation. FHEB contributed in part to the implementation of the National Population Policy and designed the National Population Logo: "Nigeria's New Baby." The development of family planning messages has contributed to an awareness of the importance of family planning and where to locate services, the benefits of specific family planning methods, and AIDS prevention. "The Road," a quarterly journal on primary health care, was initiated by FHEB an serves to provide information on population management issues. Other activities have included the publication of and distribution of annual calendars, motivational radio programs, local and international exhibitions, and training workshops for family planning facilitators and providers at various government levels. Obstacles to implementation have been funding, logistics, and other impediments. The recommendation is to strengthen the FHEB and to continue widespread production of family planning materials. Adequate resources, funds, and materials are required for designing, pretesting, redesigning, production distribution, an monitoring and evaluation.
