Analysis of the fertility model of China's Mongolian nationality and its determinants
Abstract
PIP: This study analyzed and evaluated the fertility model of the Mongolian nationality in China and its determinants. The data used in the study were obtained from the fourth national census in China in 1990. Findings showed that the birth rate of the Mongolian nationality in China has declined faster than the average level of the total Chinese population during 1981-1989. The birth rate for the Mongolian nationality was found to be at a very low level in comparison to other minority nationalities in the country like the Hans, the Manchu, and the Koreans, with a total birth rate of only 2.24. The decline in birth rates may have been attributed to a variety of factors, including improvement in education and understanding of family planning policy, increase in number of working professionals such as scientists, engineers, and technicians, and improvement in public health conditions of Mongolian women. Finally, social, environmental, and cultural factors were found to have a direct effect on the birth rate of Mongolians in China.
