Separate origins of the left internal and external carotid arteries from the aortic arch: MR angiographic findings

Sinan Cakirer et al. AJNR Am J Neuroradiol. 2002 Oct.

Abstract

Agenesis of the left common carotid artery with independent origins of the internal and external carotid arteries arising directly from the aortic arch is an extremely rare congenital anomaly. We present MR angiographic findings in a case with agenesis of left common carotid artery that, to our knowledge, is unique by virtue of its detection and description with MR angiography.

Fig 1.
Contrast-enhanced 3D MRA images (5.2/2.1, 25° flip angle)of the neck show the independent origins of the left internal carotid artery (ICA) and external carotid arteries (ECA and L ECA) that arise directly from the aortic arch. Note that a low carotid bifurcation (CCA) is associated on the right side. VA indicates the left vertebral artery.
