Relations between syncope, seizure, and arrhythmia. There are clinically important relations between syncope and seizure disorders. Diagnostic mistakes are frequent when loss of consciousness is followed by involuntary movements, usually referred to as myoclonic jerks. The main cardiovascular mechanisms causing cerebral hypoperfusion and convulsive syncope are vasovagal reactions and brady- and tachyarrhythmias. Also other connections exist between syncope and seizure disorders as outlined in this figure. The thickness of the arrows reflects the strength of the scientific documentation and/or the relation.
