Abstract

Dr. Abraham Jacobi, often called the "father of American pediatrics," rose from humble beginnings in Germany to the highest positions in pediatrics and medicine in the United States. Most of the history of American pediatrics during the second half of the 19th century is reflected in Jacobi's writings and work. This article presents a brief overview of his life and character, focusing on the important roles he played in establishing the field of pediatrics as a distinct specialty and in advocating for children's health issues.
