Problems of ocular immunopathological inflammations
Abstract
The following facts are emphasized. Release of histamine, immune complexes with complement activity or immunocyte interference provide the principle methods by which immunopathological inflammation of the eye are induced. Both antibody-mediated and cell-mediated hypersensitivity have been found capable of injuring ocular structures. Microbe-induced cellular hypersensitivity can be considered the etiological basis of some ocular inflammations, but this has not yet been irrefutably demonstrated in the majority of cases. Ocular autoimmune responses in man are still rather an idea than an established fact.
