Abstract

Interleukins are polypeptide hormones which are primarily but not exclusively synthesized by cells of the immune system (monocytes/macrophages, T- and B-lymphocytes). Up to now 12 interleukins (IL-1 to IL-12) have been described. The central function of the interleukins is the orchestration of the different cells of the immune system during host defence against pathogens. Besides the regulated stimulation of the immune reaction against foreign antigens, interleukins are involved in the stimulation of unspecific inflammatory reactions and in the induction of the acute phase response.
