Renal transplantation--demystifying the process
Abstract
Successful renal transplantation is the treatment of choice for most end stage renal disease (ESRD) patients, improving quality of life and increasing survival as compared with long-term dialysis treatment. The purpose of this article is to explain the process of transplantation by discussing the assessment of potential recipients, surgical techniques, post-operative course, potential complications and benefits. A brief overview of immunosuppression will also be discussed.
