Feline transfusion medicine
Abstract
Anemia is the major indication for transfusion in cats, and fresh whole blood is most commonly administered. Because cats have naturally occurring alloantibodies in plasma, donor and recipient should be blood-typed and/or crossmatched before the first transfusion takes place. Mismatched transfusions are ineffective and may cause life-threatening hemolytic transfusion reactions.
