[Emergencies in hematology]

Abstract

In this review common and important causes of hematologic emergencies are discussed. Upon cause, four groups for classification of the emergency are formed. Among these are hyperviscosity syndromes of different origin, impaired immun-response and neutropenia, thrombocytopenia of different causes and, last but not least, severe acute hemolysis. It is emphasized that rapid diagnosis with the help of a few common laboratory tests and immediate transfer to a tertiary care center are necessary to reduce morbidity and mortality.
