Abstract

The recently defined range of human Lyme disease in Russia coincides with that of the intensively studied agent of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE). Although identical vectors transmit both infections during the same seasons and in the same locations, more than twice as many people suffer from Lyme disease as from TBE. Edward Korenberg here describes characteristic features of vectors with respect to their seasonal activity, abundance, rates of infection by TBE and Lyme disease agents, as well as incidence of human-tick contact, and how these factors determine the incidence of TBE and Lyme disease in different regions.
