[Use of antipsychotic drugs in the elderly]
Abstract
It is actually well observed that antipsychotic drugs are commonly used in the elderly patients. The most important side-effects related to the use of first generation antipsychotics are the extrapyramidal side-effects and their consequences (increase risk of falls, problems with articulation and speech, faster decline in cognition, etc.). Today with the atypical antipsychotics much less side-effects are observed but this class of drugs is not without risks. In this paper, we propose some recommendations for the use of these medications in the elderly population.
