RFCS, RFC small subunit; RFCL, RFC large subunit. (B) Structure of the opened clamp as suggested by molecular dynamics simulations and an EM-derived structural model. The six-clamp subdomains are arranged as a planar ring in the closed form. Molecular dynamics and an EM-derived model suggest that when the clamp is opened, the subdomains adopt a right-handed spiral or “lock washer” conformation.
