Detection of viruses using hybridization techniques
Abstract
Nucleic acid hybridization provides a direct means of detection of viruses, their genomes or the transcripts found in infected cells. A brief introduction to the biochemistry involved is given in this article. Examples of the methods available are illustrated by the detection of hepatitis B viruses both in serum samples and at the site of replication, the liver.
