Advances in diagnosis and therapy of childhood tuberculosis
Abstract
Tuberculosis remains a major health problem worldwide. Recently developed diagnostic blood tests may supplant or supplement TB skin test in some settings. Emergence of drug-resistant strains remains a global concern. New anti-tuberculous agents are being developed and are greatly needed. There is mounting evidence that BCG has significant effectiveness in prevention, but development of improved vaccines for tuberculosis should remain a priority.
