[Vulvar lichen planus in children]

H Hatuel et al. Ann Dermatol Venereol. 2006 Oct.

Abstract

Background: Lichen planus is less common in children about in adults and mostly affects the skin.

Case report: A 9-year-old girl was referred for a purplish blue and violaceous, unilateral and asymptomatic vulvar lesion noted 4 months earlier and stable. Histopathologic examination showed typical features of lichen planus. She responded well and rapidly with topical steroids.

Discussion: We report the first case of vulvar lichen planus in a little girl. Mucosal involvement is uncommon in children with lichen planus and genital localisation is extremely rare. Vulvar lichen sclerosis is the principal differential diagnosis. The risk of vulvar synechia and development of vulvar carcinomas warrants regular long-term follow-up.
