Experience with clonidine-naltrexone for rapid opiate detoxification

R A Senft. J Subst Abuse Treat. 1991.

Abstract

The use of naltrexone results in an accelerated opiate withdrawal. By combining clonidine with naltrexone, severity of the withdrawal is modified. This paper describes the author's experience with use of this protocol in 55 episodes of opiate detoxification. Commercially available naltrexone (Trexan) and clonidine tablets were used in the setting of a medical detoxification unit. Of 55 detoxifications, 51 were successfully completed. Results confirm the clinical utility of this protocol as evidenced by rapid detoxification, minimal dropout, and induction of naltrexone maintenance.
