Human oxidative phosphorylation disorders. Diseases associated with defects of the respiratory chain complexes can be due to mutations in the genes of the structural subunits of the five complexes, or to the inactivation of complex specific assembly factors. The ADP/ATP carrier (AAC) mediates the transfer of nucleotides across the inner mitochondrial membrane and is therefore tightly connected to energy production through oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS). adPEO, autosomal dominant progressive external ophthalmoplegia.
